Standing Goryeong Daepyeong-ri Stone Buddha
고령대평리석조여래입상 · 高靈大坪里石造如萊立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone Buddha, located in Daepyeong-ri, Unsu-myeon, Goryeong-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, leans against an old tree, suggesting it has been moved from its original location. The relatively round, bald head is somewhat flattened from the left side to the front of the forehead, which appears to reflect how it looked at the time it was carved. The eyes are shallowly carved, a smile plays clearly at the corners of the mouth, and the cheeks are full. The neck is rather short, and three faintly carved curved lines — a samdo, the conventional three-line motif found on the necks of Buddha images — remain visible. The robe covers both shoulders, and the hands are joined in front of the chest; because the area below the abdomen is buried, its form cannot be determined. It is said that this site was once the grounds of Noonsa Temple, though there is no firm evidence for this. Roof-tile fragments from the Goryeo period, carved with a lotus design, have however been found nearby, suggesting that the area was indeed once a temple site.
