This fortress was built on a mountain 255.5 m above sea level in Sanseong-ri, Janggok-myeon, Hongseong-gun, and has a perimeter of about 1,352 m. The terrain around Sanseong-ri is rugged with narrow valleys, forming ground well suited to a strategic military position. The fortress lies 12.6 km from Imjonseong Fortress in Daeheung, Yesan (a historic site and a base of the Baekje restoration army), 37 km from Hyeseong Fortress in Dangjin, 23 km from Duryungyungseong Fortress in Jeongsan, Cheongyang, 34.5 km from Gongju, and 27 km from Buyeo. Around Janggoksanseong, the fortresses of Hakseongsanseong, Taebongsanseong and Sogunisanseong form a connected belt, suggesting the strategic geographical importance of the area. A distinctive feature of this fortress is a cave within its walls, and building foundation stones, roof-tile fragments and earthenware have been found inside it. In the surrounding area, roof-tile fragments inscribed with the characters 'Sasi', 'Sasiryang' and 'Sara', door-pivot stones, a bronze bell found in a stone-lined tomb (seokgwakmyo), and Baekje earthenware have also been discovered. These finds suggest that Janggoksanseong served as the political and administrative centre of Sasiryang-hyeon, a county of Baekje, and given its terrain, it is thought to have also been used as a stronghold of the Baekje restoration army.
