Yeongju Sudorigimwijin House
영주수도리김위진가옥 · 榮州水島里金渭鎭家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house was built with great care by the current owner's grandfather in the late 1800s. Centred on the middle gate (jungmun), it has the men's quarters (sarangchae) to the left, a stable to the right, and, directly ahead through the gate, a U-shaped women's quarters (anchae), the whole forming a square (ㅁ-shaped) layout. In the anchae, centred on the main wooden-floored hall (daecheong), there is a storage room to the left and the main bedroom (anbang) to the right; in front of these, a kitchen and a storeroom, and an upper room and a small kitchen, connect respectively to the stable and the sarangchae. The sarangchae consists of a wooden floor (sarangmaru) and a room (sarangbang); the sarangmaru projects out by one bay on the left, and plank walls on three sides enclose it as a wooden-floored room. A narrow eaves bay with a railing runs along the front of the sarangmaru and sarangbang. The placement of the stable within the house, and the door leading from the sarangbang to the anchae by way of the sarang kitchen, reflect the layout conventions of an earlier age.
