This rock-carved Buddha, carved large into a natural rock face in Jijeong-ri, Guhang-myeon, Hongseong-gun, South Chungcheong Province, is tilted slightly as a result of geological movement. The head wears a crown decorated with beads, a round urna (baekho, a tuft of white hair between the eyebrows symbolising wisdom) is clearly carved, and the hands and feet are distinctly rendered. Whereas most rock-carved Buddhas found across the country are shown standing, this one is unusual in being seated on a lotus-shaped pedestal. It is a rare work of unusual form; although the exact date of its creation is not known, it is presumed to predate the Goryeo period.
