Yeongju Sudorigimgyujin House
영주수도리김규진가옥 · 榮州水島里金圭鎭家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house is presumed to have been built in the late Joseon period. It originally had a thatched roof, which was replaced with tiles during a roof-improvement project; the roof had been pierced with 'magpie holes' (kkachigumeong) for ventilation, but these no longer survive now that it is tiled. It measures three bays across the front and two bays along the side. Centred on the wooden floor (maru) and the earthen-floored hall (bongdang) in the middle, two rooms are arranged on one side, and a kitchen and a room on the other. A distinctive feature of the plan is that a room occupies the spot where a stable would normally stand in a typical magpie-hole house (kkachigumeong-jip). This layout shows an early form of the six-bay magpie-hole house, and is valuable material for tracing the development of the gyeopjip, a deep, double-row house plan.
