Dangjin Po Garrison Fort
당진포진성 · 唐津浦鎭城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krLocated near the foot of Malbongsan Mountain in Dangjinpo-ri, Godae-myeon, Dangjin-gun, this is a square fortress built of mixed stone and earth. It encircles a broad valley, its walls following the surrounding mountain ridges, with a circumference of about 500m and a height of about 2m. During the Joseon dynasty this fort housed the naval vessels commanded by a manho, a military officer of junior fourth rank posted to the various garrisons of each province; it was used to store military provisions and weapons, and served as the mustering place for naval forces in times of emergency. Dangjin Po Garrison Fort is especially notable for displaying the form of an ongseong, a small enclosing wall built in front of a gate to protect it, and as the first site where a capstone fitted at the top of the wall has been confirmed — features that give this garrison fort considerable importance.
