Mungyeong Nongmulligobyeongsuk House
문경녹문리고병숙가옥 · 聞慶 鹿門里 高柄璹家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSituated facing south-west at the edge of the Nongmun plain, this house is one of the houses of the Gaeseong Go clan in Nongmun-ri. According to records, it is said to have been built in 1828, the 28th year of King Sunjo. Passing through the straight outer gate quarters, one finds a straight sarangchae (men's quarters) across a wide courtyard, with the anchae (women's main quarters) behind it. Originally there was a straight araechae (servants' quarters) with a middle gate behind and to the right of the sarangchae, but it was demolished in the late 1980s, and the anchae and sarangchae now form an open square layout. The gate quarters are unusually finished with a hip-and-gable roof which, seen from the side, forms the shape of the character 八 (eight). They measure five bays across the front and one bay deep, with a raised solitary gate at the centre, a room and kitchen to the left, and one-bay storerooms to the right. The sarangchae measures six bays across the front and one and a half bays deep; from the right are the sarang-daecheong (men's wooden-floored hall), sarangbang, kitchen and sarang-meoritbang (men's side room), with the last bay divided front to back into a small wooden floor and a study. The sarang-daecheong is open at the front, and a door was fitted between the hall and the sarangbang so the two spaces could be opened up together for a larger area. The anchae is centred on a daecheong hall open at the front; from the rear left, the upper room, anbang (main women's room) and kitchen project forward to form a wing, while the geonneonbang (room across the hall) lies on the right. Although the araechae has been lost and parts of the house have been altered, the building still shows the character of an upper-class residence and well illustrates the architectural style of the 19th century.
