Standing Seongju Baegun-ri Rock-carved Buddha
성주백운리마애여래입상 · 星州白雲里磨崖如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis rock-carved standing Buddha stands on the eastern side of Yonggi-gol valley, southeast of the summit of Gayasan Mountain in Seongju-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. A flat granite stone was shaped like a boat to form a mandorla, and the standing Buddha was carved in relief at its centre. A large flat stone covers the top of the mandorla like a roof, serving as a gamsil, a niche or chamber for housing a Buddha image. The head bears a thick, topknot-shaped hair bun, and the full face carries a faint smile. The thick robe draped over the full shoulders is carved deeply in a U-shape at the neck, and the right sleeve appears to be folded up. The carving of the skirt covering the lower body is very rough, and severe erosion makes it difficult to make out clearly. Given the poor overall balance of this standing Buddha, it is presumed to have been made in the latter half of the 9th century, when the ideal Buddha style of the 8th century had begun to decline.
