The Wonjeong Stele of Mulgyeseowon is confirmed to have been erected in 1790, the 14th year of King Jeongjo, making it now more than 200 years old, and in form it shows the type of stele commonly seen in the late 18th century. In particular, the pair of birds carved on both sides of the roof-shaped capstone, and the two tiers of rafters carved into the front and back of its underside, give a distinctive impression, calling to mind the roof of a wooden house. The inscription on the stele records the origins of Mulgyeseowon and the biographies of the 19 scholars enshrined and honoured there. The author of the inscription, Yi Bok-won, was a learned scholar who later served as Right State Councillor and Left State Councillor under King Jeongjo, while the calligrapher, Jo Yun-hyeong, was renowned in his time for his brushwork — both lending further distinction to this stele.
