Hongsantaebongsanseong Fortress
홍산태봉산성 · 鴻山胎封山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis mountain fortress was built atop a hill 90 m above sea level, north of Hongsan Elementary School; part of the western section of its walls has been cut away by an access road to a sports park inside the fortress. The cut section shows that stones were laid neatly only at the base of the wall, while the interior and upper portion appear to have been built up entirely with packed earth; the outline of the wall is no longer clearly visible today. Relics spanning several periods have been found within the fortress, including fragments of plain pottery, mat-pattern pottery, Baekje pottery and roof tiles; the Baekje pottery suggests that the fortress most likely began functioning in earnest only after Baekje moved its capital to Sabi. It is also the site of the Battle of Hongsan, where General Choe Yeong won a major victory over Japanese pirates (waegu) in the late Goryeo period.
