Standing Boryeong Seongjusa Temple Site Stone Buddha
보령성주사지석불입상 · 保寧聖住寺址石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe face of this Buddha image is oval in shape, but it is so badly worn that its original appearance is difficult to make out. The hair is rendered without curls, in the sobal style, and the usnisha — the raised protuberance on the crown of the head — is not clearly expressed. The left ear is missing and the nose has been repaired with cement, distorting the overall impression, yet traces remain of relatively elegant and refined carving. The three creases on the neck, a standard feature known as samdo, are distinct; the right hand is lowered and the left hand raised to rest on the abdomen, though both hands have been lost. The robe covers both shoulders in the tongyeon style, with U-shaped drapery folds running from the shoulders to the abdomen and stepped drapery folds on the arms. Overall, the drapery, the volume given to the body, and the linear carving technique indicate a style that was popular around the ninth century.
