A budo (also called a seungtap, or monk's pagoda) is a Buddhist structure that enshrines the sari, or relics, of a monk. The budo at Baegunsa Temple bears the inscription "Jeongyeondang" on its front, showing that it commemorates the monk Jeongyeondang, who practised austerities at Baegunsa Temple until his death. Including its base stone, it stands about 170 cm tall, a relatively large size. Its bell-shaped (seokjong) form, together with the inscription of the monk's name on the body stone, reflects the style of stupas from the late Joseon period. In particular, the doubled finial jewel at the top of the spire, the flattened front, and the relatively well-balanced overall form are features rarely found elsewhere in the South Chungcheong region.
