Gongju Yeongeunsa Temple Amitabha Altar Painting
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is the altar painting placed behind the seated Avalokitesvara image in Wontongjeon Hall of Yeongeunsa Temple, within Gongsanseong Fortress, Gongju. At its centre the Amitabha Buddha sits in full lotus position on a lotus pedestal, surrounded by the four great bodhisattvas, the Four Heavenly Kings and the ten great disciples. It was produced with the participation, as geumeo (lead master painter), of Geumho Yakhyo, a monk-painter of Magoksa Temple who was active mainly in the Chungcheong region in the late 19th century. Geumho Yakhyo's style is well expressed in the dignified body and expression of the Amitabha Buddha and in the facial rendering and colouring of the Four Heavenly Kings, Gaseop and Anan. Red is used as the dominant colour throughout, and the deep cobalt blue seen in the robes of the buddhas and bodhisattvas, the lotus pedestal and the halo reflects a trend of the period. An inscription on the painting records that it was made in 1888.
