Gongju Yeongeunsachilseong Fortress Buddhist Painting
공주영은사칠성탱화 · 公州靈隱寺七聖幀畵

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a chilseong (Seven Star) Buddhist painting enshrined in Wontongjeon Hall of Yeongeunsa Temple, within Gongsanseong Fortress in Gongju. At the centre is Chiseonggwang-yeorae, the Buddhist personification of the North Star, flanked by the bodhisattvas Ilgwang (Sun Light) and Wolgwang (Moon Light). Whereas these two bodhisattvas are usually shown with the sun and moon depicted on the crowns they wear, here they are distinctively portrayed holding the sun and moon in their hands. Around the Buddha and bodhisattvas, seven buddhas symbolising the Big Dipper are arranged above, and below them, at the centre, are the Samtaeseong (Three Stars), flanked on either side by the Chilwonseonggun, the seven Taoist deities corresponding to the Big Dipper. The painting is dominated by red and ochre, and the use of cobalt blue in places reflects the stylistic trends of its time. Judging from its painting style, it is considered to have been produced, together with the Amitabha Buddha painting in the same hall, by the monk-painter Geumho Yakhyo.
