This painting was made in 1747, the 23rd year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, and is recorded in its inscription (hwagi) as a Samjangtaeng, a painting of the Three Treasury Bodhisattvas. On the elongated canvas, Cheonjang Bodhisattva is placed at the centre, with Jiji Bodhisattva to the left and Jijang Bodhisattva to the right, surrounded by their attendant retinues in a typical composition. The retinues are arranged in upper and lower registers, creating a sense of spaciousness, while the upper register is rendered with five-coloured rays of light that help relieve the visual complexity of the composition.
