A jeongnyeobi is a stele erected by the state to commend exemplary figures — loyal subjects, filial sons, virtuous women — in order to encourage good public morals; this stele honours the loyalty and integrity of Jeongdam. Jeongdam (1548–1592) passed the military examination in 1583, the 16th year of King Seonjo, distinguished himself in putting down Yi Tang-gae's uprising, held a succession of official posts, and in 1592, the 25th year of King Seonjo, became magistrate of Gimje-gun. That same year the Imjin War broke out, and he confronted Japanese forces advancing through Geumsan Mountain toward Jeonju, defending Ungchi to the end and blocking the enemy's advance, but fell in battle at the age of forty-five. The stele consists of a body set on a base stone and capped with a capstone carved with a dragon's head. It was first erected as a wooden stele in the middle of the village, then re-erected in 1782, the fifth year of King Jeongjo, as a stone stele beside the road in front of the village.
