The old site of Muryangsa Temple lies south-facing on the left bank of the valley just past the Ilju-mun, the temple's first (one-pillar) gate, with part of the area now cultivated as farmland. Across the roughly 2,000-pyeong site (about 6,600 square metres), large quantities of roof-tile fragments are scattered throughout. Judging from the granite foundation stone courses and the elaborately built three-tiered stone retaining wall, this was clearly a building site constructed with great care, and the quality of the eave-end roof tiles (makse) and the various types of celadon found there suggest that, at the time of its founding, this was the largest temple in the surrounding area.
