Hamyang Donghojeong Pavilion
함양동호정

This pavilion was built in 1895, led by Jang Jae-heon — a ninth-generation descendant who had held the military post of Gaseondaebu Owijang — and others, to honour his ancestor Jang Man-ri, sobriquet Dongho, who had rendered distinguished service helping King Seonjo during his flight to Uiju in the Japanese invasions of 1592–98. It was repaired again in 1936. Donghojeong stands beside National Route 26, about 7km from Anui-myeon, Hamyang County, in the direction of Jeonju. It overlooks Ongnyeodam, one of the deep pools of the Namgang stream, and is the largest and most splendid of the pavilions in Hwarimdong Valley. In the middle of the river are a spot for singing (Yeonggadae), a spot for playing music (Geumjeogam), and a spot for drinking and making merry (Chailam); the broad rock shelf of several hundred pyeong (a traditional unit of area, about 3.3m² each) known as Chailam shows that this was a place where refined pursuits were once enjoyed. Donghojeong is a single-span, two-storey pavilion three kan (bays) wide across the front and two kan deep. Inside, a wooden plank wall survives enclosing the central bay at the rear, suggesting that, as at Geoyeonjeong Pavilion, a room was once installed here. A staircase cut from a single log stands at the left of the front to give access to the upper floor, and on all four sides a gyeja balustrade extends about 30cm beyond the columns. The floor is laid with long wooden planks (jangmaru); this too was originally a well-floor (umulmaru) later altered, and Hamyang County is now working to restore its original form. Built on a flat area of natural bedrock, it uses no foundation stones, and all the columns are round; the columns beneath the floor use large-diameter timbers, left twisted or uneven and only roughly dressed. The columns above the floor rest on square, chamfered members shaped like foundation stones at their base. Hwalju support posts stand beneath the eave tips on all four sides for stability, the tops of the columns are decorated with two-tier ikgong brackets, and round hwaban blocks are set between the changbang tie-beam and the janghyeo beneath the eave purlin as decoration. The frame follows a five-purlin structure, with a short king-post (dongjaju) on the main beam supporting the upper beam (jongbo), above which a flat ceiling (banja) is installed to elevate the building's status. The boaji of the upper beam are carved into ikgong-style brackets, and a phoenix-head ornament (bongdu) is fitted to the upper beam and set atop the chotgaji bracket arm — an unusual way of decorating the upper beam with ikgong brackets, showing the effort made to give the pavilion a splendid appearance. On the left and right sides, chungnyang beams rest on the main beam, their heads carved into dragon heads, and the entire frame is painted with dancheong (traditional multicoloured decoration). It has double eaves and a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof.
