Yesan Ilsanisujeong Pavilion
예산일산이수정 · 禮山一山二水停

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krWhere the Dalcheon Stream, flowing from Daesul in Yesan, meets the Jukcheoncheon Stream, flowing from Cheongyang, before the two flow together into the Yedang Reservoir, there is a small hill, and on top of it stands a pavilion facing south-east. The pavilion is a relatively large, single-row building, three bays across the front and two bays deep. Chusa Kim Jeong-hui (1786–1856) is said to have named the pavilion "Ilsan Isujeong" to suit the lie of the land, and to have written the name board himself. Tradition holds that the building was erected in 1849, the fifteenth year of King Heonjong of Joseon, by the Sinyang notable Yi Cheol-su (1824–1896), and it is passed down as a representative pavilion of the Yesan region. It is said to have been built for lectures and study; around 1920 a Korean-language training institute was opened there, and in 1923 it served as the founding school building when Sinyang Public Common School — the forerunner of today's Sinyang Elementary School — opened. Ilsan Isujeong, a representative pavilion of the Yesan region built to take advantage of its exceptional scenery, holds the autograph name board of Chusa Kim Jeong-hui, and, having served as a venue of early modern public education, carries great significance in the educational history of the Yesan region.
