Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA jeolryeo stele is a memorial stone erected by the state in a person's home village to honour loyal subjects, filial children and virtuous women who served as models for others. This stele honours the fidelity and chastity of Lady Yi of the Yeongcheon clan, wife of Jeong Yu-han, a resident of Silli in Gimcheon during the Joseon period. When the Japanese invasions broke out and her husband went off to fight as a righteous-army volunteer and distinguished himself, Lady Yi devotedly cared for her parents-in-law and managed the household on her own. She was then abducted by Japanese soldiers, and when faced with the threat of being assaulted, she took a silver dagger she carried in her clothing and stabbed herself in the chest, taking her own life. Thirty-six years after her death, the stele was erected and she was granted the title "jeolbu" (a woman of chastity and fidelity), to serve as an example to others. A well was also dug in front of the stele so that women might follow Lady Yi's example, and that well survives to this day. The stele, preserved inside a stele pavilion, stands on a square base, with the body of the stone rounded at both upper corners; the surface is somewhat uneven, having been roughly finished from an irregular natural stone. On the front, the inscription "Jeolbu Jeong Yu-han cheo yuin" is carved in three lines, deeply and clearly cut. The stele was made in 1633, the eleventh year of King Injo, and in December 1892, the twenty-ninth year of Emperor Gojong's reign, the court posthumously granted Jeong Yu-han the office of Tongjeongdaebu, Minister of the Board of Personnel, while Lady Yi was granted the title "sukbuin."
