Hansa Gang Dae-su passed the civil service examination (munkwa) during the reign of King Gwanghaegun, before the Injo Restoration, and went on to hold a range of prestigious posts (cheongjik) in the central government offices. However, no royal edicts (gyoji) from that period survive, including his hongpae, the red certificate awarded for passing the examination; only the edicts issued after the Injo Restoration remain, beginning with his 1631 appointment as Suchan of the Hongmungwan (Office of Special Advisors) and ending with his 1653 appointment as Chamui (Third Councillor) of the Ministry of Rites (Yejo). These edicts show in particular that for the eight years from 1631 to 1638 his court rank remained unchanged at Tonghun daebu, senior third rank, while he was appointed to posts such as Busuchan and Suchan — sixth-rank positions far below what his rank warranted. This appears to be because, during King Gwanghaegun's reign, he had been politically aligned, as a member of the Bukin (Northerner) faction, with Naeam Jeong In-hong.
