봉곡동 효열비각 · 蓬谷洞 孝烈碑閣

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis single pavilion houses three plaques and two steles standing within it, commemorating the conduct and spirit of one filial son and two virtuous women from a single family. Park Jin-hwan (1605–1650), a man of the mid-Joseon period, was devoted to his parents from an early age; when his father, who was staying in the Sangju area, fell gravely ill, he rushed to his side and nursed him with the utmost devotion. Despite his care, his father died, and Park moved his remains back to his hometown to prepare a grave, where he kept watch for three years; his health declined afterwards, and he died at the age of forty-six. In 1681, the seventh year of King Sukjong, a plaque was bestowed to honour his filial devotion and a stele was ordered erected; he was later posthumously raised to the rank of Tonghundaebu with the office of Jibui (Investigating Censor) in the Saheonbu, and then further to Tongjeongdaebu with the office of Chamui (Third Minister) in the Board of Personnel. The stele erected under King Sukjong was destroyed and buried during the Korean War; only its upper portion was later found and placed inside the pavilion, and in 1974 a new stele was erected and set up alongside it. Lady Jo of Yangju (1696–1724), wife of the grandson of Park Jin-hwan's third son, had a husband of upright character and outstanding talent, but he was frail and suffered constantly from a severe lung ailment. Despite her devoted care he died at the age of thirty-four, and the following day she took her own life to follow him. In 1729, the fifth year of King Yeongjo, a plaque was bestowed to commemorate her spirit. Lady Eo of Hamjong (1778–1811), wife of Park Nae-eun, the seventh-generation descendant of Park Jin-hwan's second son, lost her husband—who had been intelligent, dignified and in good health—when he suddenly died in 1811, the eleventh year of King Sunjo; she then hanged herself from a tree in the back garden to follow him. The following year, in 1812, the twelfth year of King Sunjo, the court bestowed a plaque so that her example might serve as a model to others.
