Yeonghaejugokdaek House
영해주곡댁 · 寧海注谷宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYeonghaejugokdaek is an old house in Hoji village. The exact date of its original construction is unknown, but it was rebuilt around 1919 and has remained in its present form since then. Standing in front of Cheonjeontaek, it is a building five bays wide and six bays deep, with a square (mizja, ㅁ-shaped) floor plan set on a spacious plot. On entering the gate, the main hall (jeongchim) sits across a broad courtyard, and to the left of the inner gate is the sarangchae, the men's quarters. The sarangchae consists of a wooden-floored sarang room and an ondol sarang room, with a toegan (projecting eaves bay) along the front; behind the wooden-floored room is a gamsilbang, a small room for an ancestral shrine, forming one wing of the house. In the anchae, the women's quarters, a storeroom and the main bedroom flank the daecheong (central wooden-floored hall), and to the right of the main bedroom a kitchen and another storeroom are joined to form the opposite wing. The kitchen has since been converted into a modern standing-style kitchen. Yeonghaejugokdaek is a relatively large house for Hoji village and is in good condition. Facing south on the west side of the road, its overall layout and composition follow the characteristic features of houses in the Yeongnam region.
