Stone Amitabha Buddha Triad of Inchwisa Temple, Asan
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a triad with the Amitabha Buddha at the centre, Avalokiteshvara (Gwaneum Bosal) on the left and Kshitigarbha (Jijang Bosal) on the right. The central seated Amitabha forms the meditation mudra and sits in the full lotus position; it has a large ushnisha and clearly defined tight curls, and wears a modified form of the robe covering both shoulders, with a pyeonsam draped over the right arm, a treatment that differs from the way Amitabha Buddha is typically depicted. The Avalokiteshvara image on the left wears the same style of robe as the main Buddha, and a seated image of Amitabha is carved on the front of its crown, clearly identifying it as Avalokiteshvara. The Kshitigarbha image on the right wears a cloth hood draped over the head, a style that was popular in the late Goryeo period, and holds a wish-fulfilling jewel in both hands resting on its lap. All three figures have round, small faces of similar form, with small eyes, nose and mouth that nonetheless give a soft impression, showing strong local, regional characteristics; on the basis of these stylistic features, the triad can be identified as a work of the early Joseon period.
