This old house in Hoji Village is said to have been built in 1830, the 30th year of King Sunjo. Passing through the main gate, a square (ㅁ-shaped) main house stands beyond the courtyard. The sarangchae (men's quarters), to the right of the inner gate, is arranged from left to right as sarang hall, sarang room and gamsil (a small alcove for ancestral tablets). Plank walls were installed on the front and left side of the hall to form a floored room, and a half-kan-wide narrow veranda was placed along the front. From the side of the sarang hall to the wall on the right, a wall was built across the front yard with a gate set into it, forming a separate space. Although the overall layout faces west, the sarangchae faces south, following a layout pattern distinctive to this village. Passing through the inner gate, a daecheong (open wooden-floored hall) lies directly ahead, flanked on both sides by the main room (anbang) and the side room (geonneonbang). In front of the main room, the kitchen and storeroom wrap around the inner courtyard; the kitchen and other rooms have since been renovated in a modern style. Unlike other houses, the main house is a single-row (hotjip) building, built low, giving it a simple, unadorned form. Although it has undergone some alteration, the house still retains, in its overall structure and layout, the characteristic features of houses in Hoji Village.
