Goejeong Pavilion was built in 1766, the 42nd year of King Yeongjo, by Goejeong Nam Jun-hyeong, who used it as a retreat he called Gyeongmokjae. Nam Jun-hyeong had no ambition for official rank, and spent his remaining years studying the classics and history and training younger scholars, earning the villagers' praise for his service to them. Records survive in Nam Jun-hyeong's own Goejeong Yusa (Writings Left by Goejeong), Nam Yong-man's Goejeonggi (Record of Goejeong), and Nam Hyo-chae's Goejeong Junggeon Gisil (True Account of the Reconstruction of Goejeong). According to Gwon Byeong-seop's Goejeong Junggeongi (Record of the Reconstruction of Goejeong), the pavilion was rebuilt in 1817, the 17th year of King Sunjo, and Nam Hyo-chae's account shows that it was rebuilt again in 1876, the 13th year of Emperor Gojong; repair work was also carried out in 1936. After the Korean War it was used for a time as a night school. Goejeong Pavilion has been preserved through the protection of the local villagers, and is a building of great value as local cultural heritage material.
