This house is said to have been built by Yi Hyeon-il, pen name Galam (1627–1704), around 1673, the 14th year of King Hyeonjong of Joseon, after the Japanese invasions of Korea (Imjin War). Yi Hyeon-il was a civil official and Neo-Confucian scholar of the late Joseon period, whose eminent learning and conduct carried him through a succession of official posts. His writings include the Galamjip, and he compiled the Hongbeomnyeonui. This is the house where Yi Hyeon-il, carrying on the scholarly tradition of Yi Hwang (Toegye), pursued his learning, and it offers a glimpse of his scholarship and spirit.
