Mun Yang-mok took part in the Donghak Peasant Revolution in 1894, and in 1907 fled to Hawaii, where, aiming to recover national sovereignty, he organised the Daedong Bogukhoe (Great Eastern Patriotic Association) and published the newspaper Daedong Gongbo. In 1908, when Durham Stevens sought to justify Japanese colonial aggression, he visited Stevens to demand a retraction of his remarks, and supported the attacks carried out by Jang In-hwan and Jeon Myeong-un. In July 1908 he supported armed anti-Japanese resistance by backing officer training at the Hanin Sonyeon Byeonghakgyo (Korean Youth Military Academy). From 1910 he served as president of the North American General Assembly of the Korean National Association, continuing to engage in the independence movement until his death in 1940.
