Jinju Sukjongsajemun Gate Stele
진주숙종사제문비 · 晋州肅宗賜祭文碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele bears an inscription of a royal commemorative address sent in 1718, the 44th year of King Sukjong, when the king dispatched Yejo jwarang (a Junior Fifth-Rank secretary of the Board of Rites) Yi An-guk to perform a memorial rite at Sindang Seowon, the Confucian academy enshrining Jo Ji-seo, who bore the pen name Jijokdang. The stele stands within a protective shelter about 30 metres from the road that passes through Jangheung-ri, Jiphyeon-myeon, on the route from Jinju to Hapcheon. The stele's base is rectangular, and its capstone takes the form of a simple roof-shaped cover stone. The stele body measures 49 cm in width, 130 cm in height and 11 cm in thickness; the lower part of the stele body is so badly weathered that its characters can no longer be read. The stele shelter has a hip-and-gable tiled roof with a lattice wall on its front face; the side and rear walls are plastered, and the shelter is enclosed by a wall of earth and stone, which is badly damaged.
