Inscribed "Dongchi3nyeon" Guardian Deities Painting of Yongmunsa Temple, Namhae
남해 용문사 동치3년명 신중탱

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Guardian Deities Painting of Yongmunsa Temple, inscribed with the date Dongchi 3 (1864), is laid out in a symmetrical three-tier composition. At the top centre, in front of an eight-panel folding screen, stand Brahma and Indra with a maiden in blue robes behind them; below these two figures are the Sun Palace Deity and the Moon Palace Deity, with two heavenly maidens placed in front of them. The middle tier is centred on Ucchusma Vajra, shown with three faces and six arms, flanked on the right by a guardian deity figure holding a sword and on the left by Skanda, a guardian deity wearing armour and a helmet with bird-feather wings; at the centre a dragon with sharp whiskers and webbed feet stands beside Garuda, who wears a bird-shaped crown. The faces of Brahma and Indra are painted with a light brown wash and outlined in red lines. The colours used are mainly red, ultramarine and malachite green: the red robes are drawn with deep red lines, while for the ultramarine and malachite-green robes the folds are expressed by alternating malachite green with pale green, and ultramarine with pale blue — a technique confirmed in the robes of the guardian deity figure.
