Ulleungdo Island Taehariimomyeonggakseongmun Gate
울릉도태하리임오명각석문 · 鬱陵島台霞里壬午銘刻石文

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a carved inscription on the flat surface of a rock face facing the coast. There are records in three places, about 5m apart from one another. At one site, "Ulleungdo" (蔚陵島) is carved horizontally. At the middle of the three sites is carved "Inspector Yi Gyu-won, fifth month of the Imo year" (檢察使 李奎遠 壬午五月); at another, due to weathering, only the name "Seosang□□Gim□□" (徐相□□金□□) can barely be made out. The carved characters are about 10cm in size, while the characters for "Ulleungdo" are 20cm. This inscription dates from the Imo year (1882), the nineteenth year of King Gojong of Joseon, and is valued as a precious epigraphic record documenting the course of Ulleungdo Island's modern history.
