Yeonghaedang Hall Portrait of Yongmunsa Temple, Namhae
남해 용문사 영해당 진영 · 南海 龍門寺 暎海堂 眞影

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a portrait of Yeonghaedang Gihong, who served as Yongmunsa Temple's Hwaeom (Avatamsaka) lecture master in the late 19th century. Judging from the eulogy (yeongchan) composed by Yu Seok-cho, written at the joha, a New Year court congratulation ceremony, of the Gimyo year, the portrait was made in April 1891. The figure in the painting faces slightly to the left in a three-quarter view, seated in the full lotus position on a chair placed on a straw mat. On the floor, a straw mat bordered in ultramarine is spread out shown in frontal view, and to the left of the painting an incense burner and other items are depicted on an incense table. In his left hand he holds a monk's staff at an angle, while his right hand rests on his crossed knee, lightly holding prayer beads. The wood-grain pattern is clearly rendered on both the incense table and the staff.
