Baek Wol-dang Portrait of Yongmunsa Temple, Namhae
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

At the centre of the picture, on a straw mat, Baek Wol-dang sits in a seven-tenths left-facing three-quarter view, in the full lotus posture. He holds a monk's staff in his left hand and a string of prayer beads in his right. The face is painted in flesh tone, with the outline drawn in ink and vermilion, while the hair and beard are rendered in short fine ink lines. The upper eyelid line is drawn in dark ink and the lower in pale ink; the irises are brown, the pupils dotted in dark ink, and the outer corners of the irises are shaded with pale ink, giving the impression of eyes set toward the upper lid and looking slightly upward. The wrinkles of the face are rendered strongly in vermilion over the ink lines. The background behind the figure is omitted, and only the straw mat is depicted on the floor. The monk wears a deep grey robe beneath a red kasaya connected by three cords of blue-green, pale ultramarine and white. The folds of the grey robe are shaded in dark ink, and the folds of the kasaya are rendered in deep vermilion. The upper and lower edges of the straw mat are outlined in blue, with white stitch-marks drawn along the horizontal lines within to indicate the seams, while the interior, on an ochre ground, is marked with short horizontal ink lines depicting the pattern of the mat. The prayer beads held in his right hand show a simple wood-grain pattern.
