Chilhwa Statue Portrait of Yongmunsa Temple, Namhae
남해 용문사 칠화상 진영 · 南海 龍門寺 七和尙 眞影

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe composition is divided into upper and lower registers. In the upper register, from the viewer's right, Hwayeongdang, Inhandang and Haegyeongdang are depicted, and in the lower register, from the viewer's right, Seyeomdang, Nawoldang, Hyowoldang and Songgokdang are depicted in order, with a cartouche bearing each figure's name inscribed above the right shoulder. The monks are all shown in three-quarter left profile, seated in the full lotus position, holding prayer beads or a monk's staff. They wear grey monastic robes with a red kasaya (monastic surplice) fastened with cords in green, ultramarine and ochre. Dark grey and pale grey robes are arranged alternately, and the hand-held objects also vary, avoiding monotony. The faces, drawn with straight iron-wire-line strokes and given slight shading for a sense of volume, and the deeply folded drapery follow traditional portrait-painting methods. However, the strong use of shading, the omission of background, the simplified straw mat and the uniform, unvarying expressions suggest that the work dates to the early 20th century.
