Ulleungdo Island Dodongnisinmyomyeonggakseongmun Gate
울릉도도동리신묘명각석문 · 鬱陵島道東里辛卯銘刻石文

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a stone monument raised from the sea during the Dodong harbour construction works of 1937. There were originally two such stones, but only one survives today. The stone is an irregularly shaped piece of basalt measuring 70 cm wide and 80 cm high, with an inscription carved in two tiers on its flat surface. The upper inscription, 31 cm wide and 33 cm high, is carved in ten lines, and the lower inscription, 18 cm wide and 40 cm high, is also carved in ten lines. The characters are small, around 2 cm in size. Because the inscription includes the phrase "Sinmyo owol" (辛卯五月, "fifth month of the Sinmyo year"), it is thought to record the Sinmyo year corresponding to the 37th year of King Sukjong of Joseon. The Sinmyo-year rock inscription at Dodong-ri, Ulleungdo Island, is valued as precious epigraphic evidence documenting the modern history of Ulleungdo Island.
