Bonghwa Samgyeseowon Confucian Academy
봉화삼계서원 · 奉化三溪書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSamgyeseowon, located on the right side of the entrance leading up to Dakssil Village, is said to have been built in 1588, the 21st year of King Seonjo of Joseon, by Kim U-ong, then magistrate of Andong, to commemorate the scholarship and virtuous conduct of the distinguished minister Chungjae Gwon Beol (1478–1548) of King Jungjong's reign. In 1601, Jeong Gu (pen name Hangang) named the shrine Chungjeonggongsa, the main hall Jeongildang, the east dormitory Samusa, the west dormitory Mubulgyeong, the main gate Hwanseongmun, and the gate tower Gwanmullu. In 1660, the first year of King Hyeonjong, it received a royal charter as Samgyeseowon. Under the 1868 order of Emperor Gojong's reign abolishing Confucian academies, the Chungjeonggongsa shrine, Hwanseongmun gate and Gwanmullu tower were demolished, and were later restored in 1951. Gwon Beol passed the jinsa examination, a licentiate degree, in 1496, the second year of King Yeonsangun's reign, and the higher civil service examination in 1507, the second year of King Jungjong, going on to hold various offices. In 1547, the second year of King Myeongjong, he was implicated in the Yangjae Post Station Wall-Writing Incident and exiled to Sakju in Pyeongan-do, where he died the following year. The academy is laid out with the study area at the front and the ancestral shrine at the rear. Entry is through Hwanseongmun gate, set beneath the two-storey Gwanmullu tower at the front; upon passing through the gate, the lecture hall stands directly ahead, with the east and west dormitories to either side in front of it. Turning to the right of the lecture hall, one finds the shrine, Chungjeonggongsa, a ritual space enclosed by an earthen wall, while to the left of the west dormitory stands the caretaker's house that manages the academy, with its own gate building. To the front right of the east dormitory stand a memorial stele and its stele pavilion, said to have been erected by local Confucian scholars in 1906, and to the left of the academy is the caretaker's house. Bonghwa Samgyeseowon has an orderly study-in-front, shrine-behind layout, in which the hierarchy of spaces is particularly notable. Although Gwanmullu and the shrine are reconstructed buildings that no longer retain their original appearance, something of the original form can still be partially found in the east and west dormitories. Considered together with its location in relation to Dakssil Village and the historical significance of the figure of Chungjae, it is also evaluated as valuable material.
