Yeongdeok Goesiriyeonggamdaek House
영덕괴시리영감댁 · 盈德槐市里令監宅

Yeonggamdaek, in Goesi-ri village, Yeongdeok, is said to have been built around 1847 by Nam Heung-su (pen name Hoeun, 1813–1899), and repaired in 1938 by his great-grandson Nam Dae-cheol. Until the 1950s the house also had a gate quarters, a mill and a stable, none of which survive today. Yeonggamdaek is a square, courtyard-style building four kan wide and six kan deep (a kan being the traditional bay between structural columns), with square columns set on a natural-stone foundation. Centred on the gate bay is a one-kan room to the left, and to the right a lower room and the sarangdaecheong, the men's quarters' wood-floored hall. The right wing, connected to this hall, comprises a two-kan sarangbang (men's reception room) and a one-kan passage bay now used as the entrance. At the rear of the sarangbang is a wall closet and a door to the interior, with a narrow wooden veranda (toenmaru) fitted; along its front, a half-kan-wide toenmaru runs across all three bays, finished with soro-sujang, a decorative beam-end treatment using small square blocks. The left wing consists of a storeroom connected to the room left of the gate bay, a kitchen, and the anbang, the main women's room; this storeroom was originally two kan in size, with one kan said to have been converted into a room around the time of the Korean War. In the women's quarters, centred on a two-kan hall, there were originally a two-kan anbang and a one-kan storage room to the left, though all three kan are now used as rooms; to the right is a two-kan upper room with a toenmaru on its outer side and a shrine niche set into the rear of its interior. A loft has also been built above the passage bay and the kitchen, used as storage space. A round column is used, one each, at the front and rear central columns of the main hall, the walls are finished with wooden board panelling, and the roof frame is a three-purlin structure. Goesi-ri, where Yeonggamdaek stands, is a clan village over 400 years old inhabited solely by the Yeongyang Nam clan; although Yeonggamdaek's appearance has been partly altered since its founding, and its construction date is not especially old, it has on the whole preserved its original form well.
