Yeongyang Woljam Head House
영양월잠종택 · 英陽月岑宗宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Yeongyang Woljam Head House is a vernacular dwelling built in 1804, the fourth year of King Sunjo of Joseon, and is the residence of the head descendant line of Jeong Yu-seok, pen name Woljam (1634–1714). To escape the turmoil following the coup during the reign of King Injo, Jeong Yu-seok moved, during the reign of King Hyojong, from Yeonghae to this place, Gamasil, land shaped like a cauldron, one of the three valley settlements—Jugok, Gagok and Dogok-ri—in Irwol, Yeongyang. He went on to make a great contribution to local scholarship and moral education, and in 1736, the thirteenth year of King Sukjong, he was appointed to the rank of Tongjeong daebu [a senior third-rank civil office]. The head house is built on a square ('ㅁ'-shaped) plan, with a distinctive arrangement of the storage spaces needed for daily life and a distinctive layout of the men's quarters [sarangchae]. Folk fixtures such as a water trough, a stable, a loft and stepping boards are relatively well preserved, and the house is notable in particular for its varied roof shapes, the construction techniques used to achieve them, and for its retention of the characteristics of residential architecture of the northern part of the region.
