Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the old house of Yi Jang-hyeong (pen name Chipwadang, 1597–1671). The exact date of construction is unknown, but the building is generally presumed to have been built about 200 years ago, with a repair said to have taken place about 100 years ago. It consists of a U-shaped main house, five bays wide and two bays deep, and a straight gate quarters, six bays wide and one bay deep. Although some alterations were made during a repair in the early 20th century, the overall floor plan and structural style, the narrow wooden verandas (jjokmaru) placed here and there for storage and convenience, and the ventilation windows all clearly show the appearance of a 19th-century house. Chipwadang was the great-grandson of Geon (1527–1592), the second son of Yi Jing, and is said to have owned ten thousand volumes of books; skilled in both prose and calligraphy, he left behind the "Donggan segeo" (東澗世稿).
