Daegoksa Temple was founded in 1368, the seventeenth year of King Gongmin of Goryeo, by the monks Jigong and Naong, but was destroyed by fire during the Japanese invasions of 1592. It was rebuilt in 1602, the thirty-eighth year of King Seonjo of Joseon, by the Venerable Tanu, and reconstructed again in 1687, the thirteenth year of King Sukjong. It is not certain whether the Myeongbujeon Hall of Daegoksa Temple — a hall dedicated to the ten kings of the underworld who judge the souls of the dead — was built as such from the outset, but its construction techniques, including the composition of its lattice doors and its woodworking methods, retain the forms characteristic of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
