Yeongyang Ha Dam Historic House
영양하담고택 · 英陽荷潭古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis historic house is said to have been built around 1710 by Si Byeok (1670–1753), grandson of Jo Im (pen name Sawol, 1576–1644), who distinguished himself in the Japanese invasion of 1592 and the Manchu invasion of 1636 and rose to the senior second-rank title of Jaheondaebu and the post of Jijungchubusa, a consultative office at court. It is the birthplace of Jo Eon-gwan (pen name Ha Dam, 1805–1870), a scholar of the late Joseon period. Because a Chinese scholar tree planted by Si Byeok's son stands on the site, the house is also known as Ssanggoedang, meaning 'Hall of the Twin Scholar Trees'. The house is a square, ㅁ-shaped building: at the front left, the men's quarters rise prominently under a hipped-and-gabled roof, while behind them the women's quarters stretch out under their own separate roof structure, unlike in other houses. Together with Woldamheon and Sagojongtaek, the head house of the Sawol branch of the Hanyang Jo clan located in Hawon-ri and Sangwon-ri in Yeongyang-eup, this house offers insight into the clan's history and culture.
