Angokseowon Confucian Academy, Sancheong
산청 안곡서원 · 山淸 安谷書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building served both as a shrine, enshrining and holding memorial rites for the portraits of Yi Jang-gyeong, Yi Jo-nyeon, Yi Po, Yi Illip and Yi Je, and as a lecture hall for study. The lecture hall was built first, in 1913, and the portrait hall followed three years later, in 1916. The lecture hall measures five kan across the front and one kan deep, with a front veranda. The ridge-beam inscription of the portrait hall, reading "崇禎紀元後五丙辰四月..." (the fourth month of the byeongjin year, the fifth cycle after the Chongzhen era — that is, 1916), shows that it was built in that spring. Both the lecture hall and the portrait hall are relatively old in date of construction, are well preserved, and express the forms of Confucian architecture comparatively well; in particular, the site is associated with Yi Jo-nyeon, posthumous title Munyeolgong, a loyal subject of Goryeo widely known for the line "이화에 월백하고" (ihwa-e wolbaekhago, "the moon is bright upon the pear blossoms").
