Seated Stone Buddha of Bongnimsa Temple, Changwon
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The Seated Stone Buddha of Bongnimsa Temple has a face that is large in proportion to the body and broadly rectangular in shape; the kasaya (monk's robe), worn in a modified tongyeon style covering both shoulders, together with the schematic, stiff rendering of the drapery folds seen at the horizontal seunggakgi (the undergarment tied beneath the robe), are typical of late Joseon-period sculpture. Owing to the constraints of stone as a material, the figure also shows sculptural limitations typical of the medium, with the hands, feet and drapery folds rendered thickly and without fine detail. In particular, the modified earth-touching mudra (hangmachokjiin) adopted by this figure also appears in the Wooden Seated Buddha of Songnimsa Temple, Chilgok (1655), the Stone Seated Buddha of Cheokpanam Hermitage at Jangansa Temple, Gijang, the seated stone bodhisattva at the Musée Guimet in France, and the seated stone Buddha at the Ho-Am Art Museum; it first appeared in the seventeenth century and can be regarded as a feature of late Joseon stone sculpture. The drapery folds also end in angular lines, which may be taken as a stylistic trait of the sculptor-monk who made the piece.
