Water-Moon Pavilion, Sancheong

Cultural Heritage MaterialColonial Period · 1915

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krWater-Moon Pavilion was built in 1915 at the foot of Suwolsan Mountain by Seokcho Gwon Du-hui to commemorate Geumjae Gwon Seup. Whereas pavilions are usually organised around an open wooden-floored hall, this one is centred instead on an ondol (heated-floor) room, apparently reflecting the cold winters of the Sancheong region. Overall it takes a symmetrical form, yet in its details it adopts an irregular arrangement, making it a fine example of a modern hanok in which functionality has been given its due place.
