Gokgangjeong Pavilion carries the legacy of Yi Sik, Lord Seongsan, a meritorious subject of the Jungjong Restoration [the 1506 coup that placed King Jungjong on the throne]. Yi Sik, a member of the Byeokjin Yi clan, held the courtesy name Jadam and the pen name Dongpa. Having passed the military examination, he served as Deputy Director of the Royal Stables and as garrison commander of Mando, among other posts. After the Restoration, when powerful court officials had Queen Sin, King Jungjong's consort, deposed, Yi Sik withdrew from the ensuing factional strife and came down to this place — land granted to him by royal decree — where he lived a carefree life amid its scenic beauty. His son, Yi Deok-chang, who held the office of panggwan (assistant magistrate), built the pavilion in 1545 to honour his late father's wishes. After several rounds of repair it was rebuilt in 1806 and renamed Gokgangjeong, a name chosen to capture the feeling of savouring both the winding course of the Nakdonggang River as it curves past and the surrounding scenery.
