Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pavilion was built in 1934 (on the eighth day of the ninth month of the gapsul year) by Daeeun Gwon Yeong-seong (1881-1959), who amassed great wealth in the Yeongyang region during the Japanese colonial period and devoted much of it to charitable works. Gwon Yeong-seong supported education at Yeongyang Hyanggyo [a local Confucian school], Gimcheon Middle School, Daegu Medical School, Yeongyang Elementary, Middle and High Schools, Hwacheon Elementary School, Daegu Agricultural and Forestry School and others, and donated grain to relieve flood victims and the destitute; commemorative steles honouring his virtue consequently stand in many places. The pavilion takes the traditional nu-jeong [raised open pavilion] form, three bays across the front and one and a half bays deep. Yet modern materials and techniques — red brick, exposed-aggregate artificial-stone finishing, and tile — were used for its stairs and walls, giving it a highly distinctive appearance in which modern elements have been added to a traditional style.
