Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYeongeun-gotaek stands in Goesi (also called Hoji) village, widely known as an ancestral settlement of the Nam clan of Yeongyang and for its dense cluster of old houses. It is said to have been built in 1871 by Nam Gong-su (pen name Yeongeun, 1793–1875), five generations back from the current owner. The building is a single-eaved, hip-and-gable (paljak) roofed house arranged in a square (ㅁ-shaped) plan, four bays across the front and four and a half bays deep. Centred on the front gate bay, a sarangbang (men's quarters) adjoins to the right and a storeroom and a room are connected to the left. The right-hand wing attached to the sarangbang consists of two rooms, one containing a small ritual niche (gamsil). The left-hand wing continues into the kitchen and the anbang (main women's room); centred on the two-bay daecheong (open wooden-floored hall), a storeroom and the anbang lie to the left, while to the right are the sangbang (an additional room) and, in front of it, a continuous wooden floor. The building has square posts set on natural stone foundations and natural stone plinths, and the upper timber frame throughout is a three-ryang (three-purlin) structure. At present the foundation, walls and chimneys have been plastered over with cement, and a narrow veranda floor (toemaru) has been added along the front of the anbang and both inside and outside the front of the sarang in the right-hand wing. Unlike the other houses in the village, this building unusually has extended corner rafters (chunyeo) fitted to both the left and right of the front, turning the roof fully into a hip-and-gable form.
