Judging by the form of its mudra, or hand gesture, this statue is thought to be the right-hand attendant bodhisattva of a triad, the figure positioned to the right of Shakyamuni Buddha. Overall, the face lacks balance in its features, and the beopui, the monastic robe, is rendered in a schematic, stiff manner, giving it less refinement than Buddhist statues of the seventeenth century or the first half of the eighteenth century. It is presumed to have been made around the latter half of the eighteenth century, and is an important example for tracing how the styles of earlier periods were absorbed and transformed over time.
