Seongju Cheomgyeongjae Hall
성주첨경재 · 星州瞻敬齋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeongju Cheomgyeongjae is a byeongsa, a hall for ancestral grave rites, where the Seongsan Yi clan performed memorial rites at the graves of their ancestors across many generations. It was built to "serve with a reverent heart" (cheomgyeong) the various ancestral tombs located in Bulmae-dong on Yeongchwisan Mountain, behind Hangae Village. The building stands within an earth-and-stone wall in a narrow valley descending from Yeongchwisan Mountain. At its centre is the elegant Cheomgyeongjae itself, four kan across the front and one-and-a-half kan deep, with a three-purlin gabled roof; to its left is a gojiksa, a caretaker's quarters, of four kan across the front and one kan deep, with a single ilgakmun gate providing access. In plan it follows the jungdang-hyeopsil type, with a two-kan daecheong, an open wooden-floored hall, at the centre flanked on each side by a one-kan ondol, or heated, room. Although long years have passed since its original construction, during which it has been repaired and renovated several times so that it no longer keeps its original form exactly, it still shows the simple plan befitting a memorial building. It is of deep significance as the jongdang, or clan hall, through which the Seongsan Yi of Hangae Village have, generation after generation, honoured their distant ancestors and repaid their debt to their roots.
