Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeongju Sambong Village School is a seodang, a traditional Confucian village school, that holds memorial rites for Yi Jin-sang (李震相, 1818–1886), one of the leading Confucian scholars of the late Joseon period. Yi Jin-sang's clan seat was Seongsan; his courtesy name was Yeoroe and his pen name Hanju. He was the son of Yi Won-ho, pen name Hango, and the nephew of Yi Won-jo, pen name Eungwa, who had served as Minister of Works. He was well versed in the Classics and Histories, and also accomplished in astronomy and calendrical science, mathematics, medicine and divination; above all he devoted himself to Neo-Confucian studies, advancing the theory that 'the mind is principle' (simjeungniseol), and was a great scholar who carried on the scholarly tradition of Toegye Yi Hwang. His own disciples included his son Yi Seung-hui, together with Gwak Jong-seok and Jang Seok-yeong, counted among the Eight Worthies of his school, and he produced students eminent enough to form a scholarly lineage of their own. The school stands facing east at the foot of Sambongsan Mountain. At its centre is a lecture hall of five bays across the front and two and a half bays deep, flanked on either side by the three-bay Gyeonggeojae (east dormitory) and Seongjonsil (west dormitory); behind the Seongjonsil stands a caretaker's house (gojiksa), and to the right of the lecture hall a hall for storing woodblocks (jangpangak).
